ON APPROPRIATION

1.Insofar as the cultural appropriation is performed by people with different standards than those prevalent in the original culture, the application of those alien standards to their cultural goods may entail a subversion of the original culture’s voice.

2.In cases in which cultural goods, such as certain images, function as insignia that customarily are subject to authorization for use, and that define the identity of a group, unauthorized use is equivalent to “the assumption of a right,” and in these cases, cultural appropriation may literally be the appropriation of identity.
